The Abbot Alere rapid HIV test is a 4th generation HIV test and is very accurate. It is highly sensitive and is able to detect 99.9% of infections with HIV at 90 days after exposure.
The Alere combination HIV test tests for HIV 1 & 2 antibodies as well as P24: an enzyme that rises early in HIV infection. This helps narrow the window and means we can detect signs of HIV seroconversion (early infection) as soon as 14 days after exposure to HIV.
At 90 days if your rapid test is non reactive (negative) you can feel reassured that you are not infected with HIV.
As a reassurance we can also organise for you to have a formal blood test with Pathology and the results can be SMS’d to you the next day.
If you would like to book in for a rapid HIV test you just need to phone and request a rapid test with Dr George Forgan-Smith

“VideoOne of the more common questions that I have been asked is, how accurate is the rapid HIV test? Here at Collin Street Medical, we use the Alere Rapid HIV Test. This is a fantastic test, and it's sensitivity, or it's ability to pick up HIV infection, is 99.9%. This is very, very good because it means that outside of the window period of 90 days, that you can feel very reassured that if the test is negative, or non-reactive, that you have not been infected with HIV. The additional thing about this test is that it tests for three different components. It's looking for the HIV antibodies, and that's for HIV1 and HIV2. It also tests for a third enzyme called P24. This is an enzyme that rises early in HIV infection. What this means is that it sort of narrows that window down. You can see signs of HIV infection as early as 14 days, and we know that at 30 days most people will show signs of HIV infection, about 95%. And at 90 days, we know that 99.9% of people will be showing signs of HIV infection. Within the context of Australia, if you're healthy, if you are fit, if you have an intact immune system, there's reason that you won't be showing antibodies by 90 days. Of course, if you have questions, the most important thing is to come in and have a chat. Talk with us about the test and whether it's the best test for you. You can book in using the numbers below, 9654 6088, and we will be able to help you. Unfortunately, the people at the front desk aren't able to answer your questions. They're very, very busy, so it's important. Just let them know you need a rapid test and to book in to see one of the doctors, in particular myself or one of the doctors who has been trained by myself, Dr. George Forgan-Smith. Have a great day, and I'm looking forward to answering your questions when you come in.
